How do you feel about theme weddings?
The wedding coordinator at the hotel we are having the reception at found it quite shocking that I am not having a theme for my reception. Apparently “all” the couples are having a theme. I thought the theme of my wedding would be ‘wedding’. I’m curious about what other peoples thoughts are. Are you having a theme? Or think themes should be left for halloween?
Nova_Queen – A Halloween wedding would be perfect for me! I absolutely love Halloween!!! Swaying my Fiance and family was not happening though lol. Congrats I’m sure it will be a blast!
I’m not making a theme no matter what other people want, I’m just curious what you guys think about it….

I think themes should be left for Halloween. A theme is like a tatoo, in my opinion. Can you think of a theme that you will certainly like your entire life?? If not, then don’t have one!

Thats entirely up to you. I wouldn’t bother as it turns it into just another fancy dress party. It’s a wedding, it’s your day, you want it to be something you remember for the rest of your life so do what you want to do. The final decision is yours.

I didn’t have a theme for mine. Nor can I think of any I went to that the theme was obvious enough for me to pick it up. If you really want a theme, go for it, but, honestly, the theme idea reminds me of little girl birthday parties – not weddings.

i think people take the concept of themes too far. if you choose tiffany blue for you color i don’t think that should automatically make tiffany your theme, it’s just the color you choose!
i think things like the beach theme are cute or whatever but i just don’t think it’s necessary to declare a theme to your wedding.

Themes are stupid. The ‘theme’ should be ‘wedding’ or ‘marriage’ not dress up or something else that makes a joke out of weddings. Just choose two nice colours and leave it at that. Or you can choose romantic or formal or casual or elegant or something like that. If you make your wedding a really weird theme you may look back on it and regret it.

I had to laugh at your question – - Since I am getting married on Halloween, that is my theme!
As far as “theme”, it can be anything. I think the ‘theme’ is just a personal touch that you like that is incorporated into the wedding. Some people put their monogram all over the place and IMO that becomes the theme.

I’m totally in agreement with you. Themes are for high school proms and kids’ birthday parties IMO. The only “themes” a wedding needs is the fact that it’s a wedding and a color scheme. I didn’t even know people themed weddings until I came to this site!

I think themes are great. You could have a victorian theme that would be beautiful for a wedding reception. I am one of those who doesn’t plan to have a formal wedding. So I will definitely have a theme for my wedding reception just to lighten things up. While it’s a serious day I want everyone to have fun and have a good time and not worry about being formal for such an ocassion.

Only have a theme if you and your fiance wish to have one. If you have a very humorus family then make it fun. It is supposed to be the most romantic day of your life. Make it special and make it the way you want too. It is your wedding day not hers.

its your wedding your decision
i am mixed on the idea of a theme i have never been to a wedding with a real theme but i dont know if having a few things constitutes a theme
i am a huge nascar fan and there are 2 things that i want to incorporate into my wedding someday just minor things like a checkered flag garter but thats not really a theme
its your wedding do what you want but i would say IF you decide you want a theme dont go overboard like say you love precious moments put a charm of one around your ankle or in your purse or something no big deal but just dont go crazy with them
its your wedding do what you want not what she wants
congrats on your engagement

well, by a theme she must mean a “spring” theme with spring flowers or a “color” theme incorperating your dress colors and flowers. Most wedding themes are seasonal. You can choose it to be a “romantic” theme with lots of roses and shades of pink and reds with draping fabrics or a “elegant” theme with things that sparkle but are simple. Maybe instead of using the word “theme” use ’style” Im sure that since she’s a wedding coordinator that shes just trying to get a feel for your tastes and style so she can help you achieve your dream look for the ceremony.

We are having a theme. It’s “Chocolate”… so to us what that means is that our color scheme is based on Chocolate brown, creme, and Champagne Gold. Our flowers, dresses, and decorations are all in those colors.
Our favors are champagne glasses filled with Rocher chocolates, and we are having a Chocolate candy buffet with take out boxes for our guests to fill and take home. Our cake is actually cupcakes with a white chocolate almond icing and our signature drinks are “milk” and “chocolatinis”.
We are also thinking of having a coffee / hot chocolate bar.

I’m with you. I think most theme weddings are a bit strange and that the main theme of a wedding should be “we’re getting married.”
I think there are a few exceptions – we got married two days before Christmas, so we had poinsettias, wreathes, and Christmas trees. So I guess technically, it was a Christmas-themed wedding. Now, if we’d gotten married in June and decorated the hall like Christmas, that would be weird. I have a friend who is getting married in the fall, so she’s having pumpkins and autumn leaves as decorations. Honestly, though, I think having a theme that reflects anything other than “love” or the season in which you’re getting married is just plain weird. I knew one girl whose wedding theme was teddy bears, and I thought it was the tackiest thing I’d ever heard of.

I am about to get married myself and i think there is a difference between a theme and a vibe that you might want to portray to your guests. for instance me and my fiance will be getting married on the beach so we will be hanging driftwood around our reception venue and our colours will be white and tan. so we arent really having a set theme as much as we are just making sure there is a definate link between our ceremony and reception. i would never have a ‘theme’ though, i think that is actuall very tacky. i mean anyone that has a big theme like “the 80s” or “western” is probably going to regret it ten years down the track. each to their own but i think timeless and fun is the way to go. hope your wedding day is everything you want it to be! good luck!

I am not much for the big themes that are in these days, my one friend fell in love with Spain and had a “Spanish wedding” complete with flamingo dancers, and the husband in a matador suit .
I do not find anything wrong with little details that tie things together (ie double hearts on the invites, as favors, and on the champagne goblets) And in fact this is what I am doing simply because my wedding is a mishmeal of cultures (Indian, Italian, Irish, and American) so I wanted something to give it some kind of continuity.
We will be having the tree of life on our invites, as little jewels on the program and menu. And it will tie into our centerpiece which is a large tree with the tops being entirely flowers. And on the bottom will go crystal flowers in the bed. I have been told I am having a “nature theme” but I don’t find this to be true, because my cake will have a henna design on it, and my band of my dress a sari design, etc. There are also no costumes, or anything being done differently then a normal wedding. And to be honest the tree on the invite I fell in love with, then the centerpiece. I didn’t put them together until I sat down and looked at my planning notebook.

We are having a coffee/espresso bar. We went to see one set up for us the other day and it is well worth it!

I’m with you–WEDDING is a fine theme for a wedding. I never even heard of people having “themes” for weddings until I started coming here. If it’s done subtly, I think a theme could be nice, but it’s not a broadway play or whatever, it’s a wedding!
wannabeamom on February 10, 2010 at 12:01 am
I like the ideas that theme weddings can bring like mafia style colour and style…. or civil war stuff but dont go to crazy… there is such a thing as to much hun!
Lydia on February 10, 2010 at 12:10 am
I think the same as you. The theme for a wedding should be “A Wedding”. The style of wedding is a different thing – whether formal and traditional, or casual; then you choose colors; use elements of your ethnicity, etc.
outlaq_19 on February 10, 2010 at 12:50 am
A theme is a waste of money. The most important things is the food and entertainment.
My Fiance loves Percious Moments. We have few things that are them. The cake server adn cake topper are only thing. If I went all out, I figured I would have to spend and extra $2,000 on the decorations.

The wedding coordinator at the hotel is being hired by you. YOU are the boss. She is there to serve you. She would like to be in charge, but that’s not the way it goes. Some people like themes while others don’t. Remember that her comments are only suggestions and not the way things have to be.

i am not having a theme and i really dont think weddings need a theme.
D4Pres2012 on February 10, 2010 at 2:44 am
no no no I have never been to a theme wedding but I have seen pictures and in history, it doesn’t hold up. you will look back at your wedding photos and say, why are all the guys wearing purple coats with tails and top hats? how tacky!
SirenSong on February 10, 2010 at 2:49 am
We’re doing a Halloween theme. That said, I have only ever been to one theme wedding 20 yrs ago and it was a subtle Christmas theme which was beautiful but obviously not for everyone. As popular as everyone says theme weddings are, honestly not that many people actually have them in real life. If the couple wants to host one and it fits with their personalities, then I don’t see anything wrong with it. There will always be someone who’s upset no matter what the situation.

I don’t want one, but to each their own!
